Hockey

Bill Colbourne was a co-founder of the Burnaby Minor Hockey Association. He has been involved in minor hockey for nearly 50 years as an official, referee-in-chief and coach, from peanut to junior for over 20 years.

Colbourne also served 11 years with the B.C. Amateur Hockey Association, including a stint as its president from 1981 to '84.

"I grew up chasing my wife around for the last 50 years and now I've chased her into the hall of fame," Colbourne quipped. "It was not expected when I started out 50 years ago."

Soccer

Merril Gordon was the founder of Cliff Avenue United Soccer Club in North Burnaby, which grew into the largest juvenile soccer club in Burnaby.

Burnaby's 1967 citizen of the year also started the first youth soccer exchange with Washington State, a program that grew to involve over 10,000 boys.

"I'm honoured. A lot of wonderful people working here in Burnaby are going in. Burnaby is a city of volunteers, who volunteer with a passion. It's even better than professional coaching. They (the volunteers) are doing it for the community and the city," Gordon said.

Soccer

Alex Turkington spent close to 40 years working in youth soccer as an official and referee. He is a life member of the B.C. and B.C. junior and juvenile soccer associations, now B.C. youth soccer, and B.C. soccer. Turkington also oversaw the formation of the Burnaby juvenile boys soccer association.
